Sammy Collins had definitely disappeared and not to return home to Ohio because his parents had called the Las Vegas police department and filed a missing personâs report after Sammy hadnât gone home for Christmas. The investigation had been handled by a detective from the narcotics bureau.
âWhy would narcotics handle a missing person?â Maria asked.
âIâll call and find out,â Michael said.
The narcotics detective had handled the missing persons case because Sammy Collins was suspected of being a mule for a Mexican cartel. Heâd made at least one and maybe as many as five trips south of the border in a rented RV. Sammy had never been caught with drugs in a car, but heâd been fingered by another mule who had been caught. The narcotics bureau was waiting for Sammy to rent another RV, so they could catch him in the act.
Instead, he disappeared.
When the detective went to his last known address, a new renter was already in the apartment, and the landlord told him that Sammy had just left one night and never returned. The landlord couldnât even be sure of when Sammy had disappeared because he only noticed Sammy was gone when the rent wasnât paid.
The narcotics detective couldnât see why the cartel would kill Sammy. They hadnât heard anything about Sammy stealing from anyone, and the cartels werenât stupid. They didnât kill a US citizen unless they had a damn good reason, but whatever had happened, Sammy hadnât come back and by the time anyone was the wiser, heâd been gone so long that picking up the trail was next to impossible.
âWhat did he say about credit cards and bank accounts?â Maria asked.
âHe said Sammy hadnât used his card since early October, and the bank account had a few thousand in it, just sitting there,â Michael said.
âHeâs definitely dead,â Maria said.
âYeah, but I donât really see how this has anything to do with us. Guys with cartel ties tend to disappear,â Michael said.
âBut your friend didnât think that,â Maria said.
âWho else can just make a guy disappear? He got stuck in a trunk and brought south of the border to never return.â
âMaybe, but the timing seems a little suspect, doesnât it?â Maria said.
âWho gets killed over poker games? What is it, 1843?â Michael said.
âLetâs watch that show Kent mentioned. The one where Slate threatened to sue him,â Maria said.
